Illegal Cosmetic Contacts – Is Going Blind Worth It?

With Halloween approaching many are scrambling to secure those last minute details to put their costume over the top. In a recent Philadelphia Inquirer article the dangers of illegal cosmetic contact lenses was addressed and it’s not as rare an occurrence as you might expect:
According to the American Optometric Association, 16 percent of Americans have worn decorative contact lenses. A quarter of those, or more than 13 million people, bought them from an illegal source.
The risks of purchasing illegal cosmetic contacts include toxic chemicals and corneal ulcers and with that, the NJSOP’s Dr. Joel Silbert is quoted in the article asking “Is going blind worth it?”
